Do you need a website?

Increasingly, potential clients and customers are turning to the internet to connect with business. One analyst predicts a 39% drop in yellow page print advertising over the next four years, and we all know newspapers are dying a long slow death so counting on traditional small-business advertising like classified ads in local papers and yellow page ads may not reach the people you're trying to reach. Even older readers are abandoning the newspapers, and many younger clients in particular tend to go to the internet first when they're looking for a service or product. The bottom line is, many potential clients expect you to have a website, even if it's no more than a simple online brochure.

How do I keep your website development costs down? In several ways.

I use RapidWeaver to design your site, and base your site's functionality on RapidWeaver's plugin architecture. There are many plugins for things like blogs, e-commerce, content management, file management, password protection, photo display, secure forms, integration of Google Docs, and many other areas of functionality. Using existing plugins rather than hand coding means much higher productivity for me ... and much lower development costs for you! RapidWeaver uses themes to control the look and feel of your site; there are many high-quality themes available, and I only use those that provide a wide range of customization options so we can develop just the style and colors you want for your site. Yeah, I know: there are a lot of products out there that provide template-based development ... but RapidWeaver's themes are truly professional-looking, and cover a wide range of styles. Bear in mind that all the images in RapidWeaver themes can be switched out for your own images, and the colors can be changed to complement those images. Where necessary, I will use custom HTML, CSS, PHP, and javascript to "tweak" the appearance of your site so it's just right: but I'll minimize this tweaking to control the cost of the final product. I'll also provide guidelines for the raw content you'll provide me, and help you find the right off-the-shelf low-cost artwork and stock photos for your site design. I'll use powerful graphics programs to massage your imagery into final form, and can develop a logo, business card, stationery, brochures, or other materials that complement your site design.

Another possibility is installing and configuring off-the-shelf blogging, content management or wiki software so you can manage your own content. There are open source options available in all these areas.

If you want to do it yourself, I can help you purchase software (or download free software) to create and maintain your site, and provide you or your employee with training on website design, maintenance, and SEO. And if you want me to develop a more complex database-driven site, I can do so using the programming language PHP and the MySQL database engine. If a project's requirements are outside my skill set, I will let you know immediately and offer you the option of subcontracting part or all of the project to another developer (with me managing the project), or help you find someone who has the proper skill set.
